Africa
The touristic particularity of Africa lies in the wide variety of points of interest, diversity and multitudes of landscapes as well as the rich cultural heritage.
Africa is the second largest continent after Asia. It covers about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth. It is bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the east by the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and on the south by the mingling waters of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
Off the coasts of Africa are a number of islands associated with the continent. They are Madagascar, one of the largest islands in the world. Smaller islands include the Seychelles, Socotra, & the other islands to the east are Comoros, Mauritius, Réunion, & to the southeast is Ascension, St. Helena, & Tristan da Cunha to the southwest is Cape Verde, the Bissagós Islands, Bioko & to the west is São Tomé and Príncipe then Azores & the Madeira & Canary islands to the northwest.
In ancient times the Greeks are said to have called the continent Libya & the Romans to have called it Africa, perhaps from the Latin aprica (sunny) or the Greek aphrike (without cold). Romans are said to have called it Afriga, the land of Afrigs the name derived from the Berber communities of North Africa.
