Lion park is a sanctuary for lions, approximately 23 km from Harare along Bulawayo road. It is about 30 minutes drive from Harare. It used to be called the Lion & Cheetah Park but unfortunately there are no more cheetahs as they are said to have died from some form of anthrax.

How to get there Google Maps

The distance I am giving is from the junction of Bishop Gaul Avenue & Samora Machel Avenue in Harare. Continue on Samora Machel Avenue, which becomes Bulawayo Road (A5) out of Harare for 21.32km then turn left on the sign board which says Lion Park, then at 21.6 Km cross over a railway line & pass Somerby Store on the left & at 22.1km you will reach the entrance gate to the park.

My favourite part was driving into the lion enclosure & seeing the beasts up-close.

Besides lions you will also see many other game species such as zebras, giraffes, eland, nyala & duikers.

It is a perfect place for a family outing. There are also 2 camels brought in from South Africa in May 2017, Boniface the male one & Agnes the female.

Lion Park is home to a Galapagos tortoise called Tommy who is over 300 years old & weighs around half a tonne .

Tips when visiting the park

If you are planning to have a picnic here the best is to carry your own food & drinks as the small shop onsite is a bit pricey. We carried our own picnic basket.
